Last July, the AABLI held its first ever Black Commissioners Reception in Los Angeles, California. During the event, a number of commissioners and local lawmakers were on hand to talk about the benefits of AABLI’s Public Boards and Commissions training program, which guides potential applicants through the application process. Supported through funds from the James Irvine Foundation, the program teaches participants how to apply for public board positions and/or put themselves in the running for an appointment to a public board. Numerous speakers at the reception praised the program’s success over its pilot period from December, 2016 to May, 2017.
